Unveiling Hamas’ Underground Network in Gaza: The Hidden Frontline Revealed

OThe attack of Hamas that crossed the border of Israel on the 7th of October upset the social and political situation in West Asia. Israel claims that between 200 and 400 people have been taken hostage by Hamas and that the fighting will continue until they are freed. Israel is fighting a ground war with tanks for that. However, there are reports that it is the tunnel networks in Gaza that keep Israel from drinking water in Gaza. Even Israel’s notorious spy network, the Mossad, has no idea regarding Hamas’ tunnel network. Israel is concerned that Hamas has not been able to make a dent in Gaza City despite its heavy bombardment.

The tunnels in Gaza that water Israel today were not made today or yesterday. Tunnel construction in Gaza began in the 1990s. The 1982 peace accords with Egypt led to the closure of the Rafah town between Gaza and Egypt. After that, the local miners, who are experienced in digging wells, start building tunnels for the first time in order to unite the divided families of Rafah on both sides and to bring food and other materials. The short tunnels that used to transport people and food in Rafah slowly began to increase in length with the Second Intifada (Second Palestinian Uprising) that began in 2000. By that time, weapons and other illegal items started passing through the tunnels.

In 2005, Israel conducted a military-civilian withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Gaza was later allowed to operate independently. The following year, Hamas came to power in Gaza through elections. Daphne Richmond-Barak, an assistant professor at Israel’s Reichman University and author of the study, says that “the nature of the tunnels began to change.” He argued that Hamas was preparing for an underground war. Following Hamas’s takeover of Gaza, coalition tunnels were built far below Gaza City. Many were interrelated. These tunnels became miles long. Reports have surfaced recently that Hamas has begun manufacturing weapons in such tunnels. These tunnels were used by Hamas to kidnap Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2006. Today these tunnels are as complex as ‘spider webs’, according to Archyde.com.

Email messages between Indian student and German professor go viral!

A tunnel discovered by Israel ten years ago was 66 feet underground and 1.5 miles long. Israel estimated that the tunnel would cost regarding $10 million and require 800 tons of concrete. Richmond-Barack claims that over the years Hamas has built an “underground city” beneath Gaza. It is also worth noting that all these tunnels were built during a time when Israel imposed strict restrictions on construction materials to Gaza. There are no estimates of the length of the tunnels under Gaza. At the same time, Israel believes that 300 miles (482 km) of tunnels are under Hamas control and that Hamas may be holding hostages somewhere in them.
