Mega contract extension for Bo Horvat. The 27-year-old was traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the New York Islanders just under a week ago.
Before Horvat has completed his first game for the new franchise, the Canadian has signed a long-term contract with the Islanders. His new contract is for 8 years and will bring him a total of $68 million. That equates to an annual salary of $8.5 million through the 2030/31 season.
Horvat would have become a free agent following this season. Thus, the Islanders tie the forward early. The 27-year-old was drafted ninth in the first round by Vancouver in 2013. He scored 420 times in 621 regular-season games. In his career, Horvat only reached the play-off in two seasons.
He will play his first game for the Islanders Monday to Tuesday with the Philadelphia Flyers. Points are urgently needed. The Long Island franchise is two points behind last playoff spot but has played three more games than the Pittsburgh Penguins.
