Salt prices are unstable ahead of Japan’s discharge of contaminated water, and consumer concerns are growing.

The price of ‘coarse salt’, also known as bay salt, is around 14,000 won for a 5kg bag this week, twice as expensive as in normal years.

In the end, the government, which had explained that production had temporarily risen due to a decrease, came up with an emergency measure.

We will extend the production period of bay salt until the end of October to supply 40,000 tons more, and promote ‘contract shipment’, which is to put cheap bay salt on the market by making a pre-contract with producers.

It also cracks down on hoarding by middle wholesalers.

However, it is unknown whether the anxiety that other seafood prices will rise will subside.

Reporter Park Jin-soo covered the story.

The salt shelves are empty everywhere.

Consumers hurry to pick up the remaining products.

This month, salt sales at large supermarkets have soared up to three times compared to the previous month.

As the shortage continues, salt is sold a lot at convenience stores.

In addition, more and more consumers are looking for dried fish such as anchovies, seaweed, and kelp.

It is an analysis that demand is focused on items that can be stored for a long period of time.

The Minister of Oceans and Fisheries visited Shinan-gun, South Jeolla Province, which is the main producer of salt, and reiterated that a sufficient amount of sun-dried salt will be supplied for the next two months.

Starting next week at the earliest, the government will crack down on some retailers’ cornering and buying and selling and exaggerated that encourages purchases that raise prices.
