Unsolved: The Mystery of Christine Van Hees and the Mushroom Farm Murder

Almost 40 years ago, on February 13, 1984, a fire broke out near the VUB. On the spot, the firefighters discover the remains of a body, that of Christine Van Hees, a 16-year-old teenager who lived not far from there. The autopsy will show that she suffered horrific acts of torture. Neighbors heard a girl scream “Mom!”, with heartbreaking cries for help, but no one called law enforcement. Since then, the culprit or culprits have still not been found.

Although the file was prescribed in 2014, La Une decided to bring this case out of oblivion into which it was sinking. All the people directly or indirectly linked to the investigations have been contacted and those who agreed to testify can be counted on the fingers of one hand. A very meager loot which nevertheless makes it possible to retrace as exhaustively as possible the course of this legal saga which has shaken Belgium.

The famous “mushroom farm crime” will remain an enigma

The documentary thus reveals with dazzling clarity why the investigation has skated so much, the police having searched just regarding anywhere. They suspect punks, satanic or rockabilly movements, the Brabant Killers, Marc Dutroux, etc. The RTBF does not claim to give the solution but operates a salutary sorting between these hypotheses.

More surprisingly, these adventures allow us to immerse ourselves in the context of the 80s and 90s. An immersion that we did not expect but which is particularly successful. The program thus accurately paints a dark portrait of Brussels society at the time, with the anxiety aroused by these years of lead. Finally, the initiative of La Une pursues a laudable goal: to call on any individual who has information on this crime to give it, since justice can no longer prosecute.
