Unseasonably Warm Weather Disrupts Nature’s Cycle: Buds and Blossoms Appear as Autumn Struggles to Take Hold

Up to 26 degrees predicted this weekend while autumn should already be well established. And this seems to disrupt nature. Buds are already appearing on certain trees.

In her garden in Andenne, Catherine Decerf pampers her rosebush every day. And for a few days, surprise! New rose buds are blooming there. “It’s a second flowering. I make bouquets every two or three days. If we don’t have frost, the roses might last until November, that would be exceptional.”

Even surprisingly in the orchard of the Domaine régional de la Hulpe. On some young apple trees, new flowers have recently appeared. The tree actually thinks it’s spring. “We see new growth every day”explains Nicolas Bronchain, forest ranger at the Nature and Forests Department, in Hulpe. “This requires energy from the tree. It risks being weakened during its next flowering, next spring, and therefore aging prematurely.”

At this season, when the first buds are formed, the tree should normally go dormant. Slow down your growth and conserve your energy to face winter. It is the cold which usually gives it this signal, but this year, it is slow to settle in, which disrupts the natural cycle of plants.
