This German television series is “freely inspired” by two true stories: the disappearance of the photographer Birgit Meier in 1989 and the murders of two couples in a German forest, also in 1989. Here are viewers immersed in the atmosphere of the West Germany in the late 1980s. In the series, it was a woman named Barbara Neder who disappeared. She was going through a divorce and suspicion fell on her future ex-husband, a printer whose business was flourishing. Barbara Neder’s brother, Thomas Bethge, is the head of the Hamburg judicial police but, disciplined, he does not interfere in the investigation of his colleagues which takes place in a jurisdiction other than his own. He is of course wrong, the investigation is botched. Twenty-six years later, retired, he reopened the case. Watching it, we say to ourselves that this series might have spared one or two episodes, but in the end we realize that the length and the multiple details have plunged us into a state of nervousness allowing us to better understand the main protagonists. There is a lot of talk regarding what is left unsaid, regarding those things that we don’t want to talk regarding, that we sometimes don’t even want to think regarding and that eat away at us. This is an uncomfortable series, as they say today.
