Unsafety; Has crime ‘taken over’ Highway 57?

While the Government of the Republic insists that all high-impact crimes are on the decline in the national territory, and even states that Mexico is a safer country than the United Statesthe evidence to the contrary just keeps piling up every day.

A worrying example of this is the report that we publish in this issue, regarding the increase in the incidence of crimes against carriersparticularly in some sections of Highway 57, the most important route that connects the northeast border with the center of the country and through which an important portion of international trade circulates.

Robberies, assaults, kidnappings, harassment and other forms of crime have increased in recent years, according to the testimony of cargo transport operators. Worst of all, according to these testimonies, crime has literally taken over certain points on the highway.

The once “safe whereabouts” have ceased to be so and certain roads, service stations and places have been identified as particularly dangerous spots, because they combine two aspects that constitute the perfect environment for crime: the presence of criminal groups and the total absence of authority, notably from the National Guard.

The reality that the testimonies reveal portrays a situation that the Federal Government has denied time and time again but that, it seems clear, is much more frequent than we would like: there are points of the national geography where the law that prevails in that of delinquency. There, the State simply and simply does not exist.

How have we arrived at this reality? The most likely explanation, unfortunately, is that the “absence” of the State in places where crime rules does not occur due to lack of capacity of public institutions to maintain or regain control, but because law enforcement officials have been intentionally absent from those places.

Corruption, that thousand-headed monster that those who govern the country today so many times denounced from the opposition and they offered to destroy as soon as they had the helm of the national ship, it is still there, untouched, and perhaps spreading its tentacles more widely and suffocatingly than in the past.

That is precisely the worst part of reality: seeing ourselves forced, faced with this reality, to utter that phrase that violently portrays the failure of a company or the absolute collapse of an illusion: “we were better when we were worse”.

It would be expected that the authorities responsible for regain control of the road 57 stop using euphemisms and pretexts to hide your incompetence or justify the corruption of some of your members. Because what we need at this time are concrete and specific actions.

What we urgently require are results. And not just any result, but a concrete one: that criminals stop being the “owners” of the road.
