Unrest at Senegal’s Largest University: The Aftermath of Ousmane Sonko’s Sentencing

At the center of the disputes, the largest university in the country ignited following the sentencing on Thursday June 1 of political opponent Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison. It is closed until further notice.

On this Friday morning, the four charred cars behind the huge gray iron gate at the entrance to the Cheikh-Anta-Diop University in Dakar – as well as the nervousness of the police and security forces in the perimeter – give an overview of the day before. “It’s a real disaster, a good part of the campus has been destroyed”, laments Ibrahima Ngom, a geography student, dragging his suitcase. He spent the day before without leaving his university room, the shutters closed, eating only couscous and sugar, while, in the spans of the campus, the situation degenerated.
