In Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, it was confirmed that there was a case where the birth was not reported despite giving birth, and the police launched an investigation. It is reported that the birth mother claimed, “After giving birth, I handed over the child to an unknown person through the Internet.” The Women’s and Youth Division of the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency announced on the 22nd that they were investigating a woman in her 20s who was accused of violating the Child Welfare Act (abandonment). Mr. A is suspected of giving birth to a baby at a hospital in Seoul in December 2021 and then handing the baby over to an unidentified person. She is reported to have stated that Mr. A said, “She mightn’t afford to raise a child, so she found someone on the Internet who said she would take the baby, so she handed it over.” While verifying the credibility of Mr. A’s statement, the police are checking the Internet website to find out the identity of the person who took the child. Previously, the city of Hwaseong was notified by the Board of Audit and Inspection that the births of four children had not been reported, and to check the safety of the children, and conducted an on-site investigation. Three of them were registered as normal, but it was confirmed as a computer error and the child was found to be safe. In the case of Mr. A, when the identity of the person who handed over the child might not be confirmed, the police were requested to investigate. In a regular audit by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Board of Audit and Inspection confirmed cases in which regarding 2,000 domestic infants born in 2015 had not registered their births, and among them, 20 or so were selected and notified that each local government should check the safety of the children. During this process, on the 21st, the bodies of two infants were found in a refrigerator in a house in Suwon. A 30-year-old mother, A, has been requested for an arrest warrant on charges of infanticide. Reporter Jeongha Lee jungha98@hani.co.kr
