“If the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which conducted the investigations and has a 360-degree vision, believes that there may be elements of suspicion or connection between the Gambirasio murder and the Verzeni crime, it is right that it investigates further, even in the presence of a man sentenced to life imprisonment. Because let’s not forget that public prosecutors have the obligation to find elements in favor of the convicted person and the person under investigation. If there are new elements, one must never be afraid of the truth, it must be sought even if it is uncomfortable. And given the difficulties for Bossetti in examining the DNA of Unknown 1, I hope that these investigations will take place where there are points of contact between the two cases.” Lawyer Claudio Salvagni, Massimo Bossetti’s defender, speaks to about the possibility of new analyses on the genetic profiles of the murder of Yara Gambirasio and the comparison with Moussa Sangare, the 31-year-old who confessed to the murder of Sharon Verzeni, which took place not far from Brembate di Sopra, the town from which Yara disappeared on 26 November 2010 and was then found dead in a field on 26 February 2011. Bossetti is serving a life sentence for the murder of Yara.
Lawyer, do you believe there are links between Sangare and the Gambirasio case?
“Only the Prosecutor’s Office can know. For me, who only knows the documents of that trial, I know that on the one hand there is the murder of a young girl that occurred in 2010 and, on the other, the murder of a young girl committed today more or less in the same area, apparently without any motive. Therefore, this matter deserves further investigation where the Prosecutor’s Office finds elements useful for uniting the two cases.”
What would change for Bossetti if there was a positive match between Sangare’s genetic profile and the DNA found on Yara?
“It would be sensational news, because it means that Sangare could also be implicated in that murder. Then, to exclude Bossetti’s responsibility, it would be necessary to also contest the DNA of Unknown 1, or find that the two, Sangare and Bossetti, had no point of contact and thus exclude any possible complicity. Because the Prosecutor’s Office could also say that Sangare killed Yara, but there is the DNA of Unknown 1 attributed to Bossetti. So what do we do, do they remain in complicity? Does one exclude the other? These are all hypotheses that have a complex development and the question cannot be reduced to such a simplistic way. And even if there were a confession by Sangare, in pure theory it would not be entirely sufficient to exclude Bossetti, because they could believe that his DNA is there anyway and that his responsibility would be such even in the presence of another responsible person.”
That is, could the presence of the DNA of Unknown 1 and that of Sangare be interpreted as if the two committed the crime together?
“This could be a development. But the investigators could also say: “No, if there is one, it means that it excludes the other”. And then the Prosecutor’s Office itself could lean towards a request for review. There are many hypotheses, so an in-depth analysis is always desirable where there are elements of doubt and suspicion that merit an in-depth investigation. We could find additional elements, which could lead us to another person responsible in place of Bossetti. So all the in-depth analyses resulting from a 360-degree assessment of the facts are desirable. And I cannot have that, because I do not have access to Sangare’s documents”.
Especially in light of several unsolved crimes committed in the area in similar ways…
“Thinking as a man in the street, I tell you that it is suspicious that there are all these unsolved particular deaths. The very fact that Sangare killed Verzeni for no reason, just because he was passing by, brings me even more to the connection with the Gambirasio case. Why was poor Yara killed? She was an irreproachable girl. Even this death, if there were not a convicted person in prison today, would seem absolutely inexplicable. So much so that, even for the sentences, the motive has not been identified. If we turn back the hands of the clock to Yara’s death and analyze it, we do not know why she disappeared. No one saw her outside the gym, there is no contact with some strange boy, there is nothing. The lack of elements from then with the lack of elements today. Because if there had not been that camera to film the bicycle, they would never have gotten to Sangare again. This is the point of contact that we probably find in other deaths in the area, like that of the Indian girl filed as suicide. I have seen the photos and it seems to me anything but a suicide. So I repeat: further investigations to seek the truth are always desirable. And the Prosecutor’s Office must not stop in front of truths that have already been written, because the judicial truth of Bossetti’s conviction, in my opinion, is a wrong truth”.
Are you afraid that investigations will be done on unsolved cases but the Gambirasio crime will not be investigated because it has already been solved?
“This is exactly what I think. There is no need to be afraid of a seemingly solved crime like Yara’s, at least for justice. Because there is a convicted person who has been saying for ten years that he is innocent and that his conviction is a huge mistake. I have asked for the tests of the Unknown 1 DNA, I have not requested a comparison with Sangare’s, but I hope that, where the Prosecutor’s Office has the elements, it will do so without fear of a possible inconvenient truth that contrasts with a truth already written in the trial.”

New Twists in the Yara Gambirasio Murder Case: DNA Analysis and Potential Links to Sharon Verzeni’s Murder
The murder of Yara Gambirasio, a 13-year-old Italian girl who was found dead in a field in 2011, has taken a new turn with the possibility of DNA analysis linking the case to the recent murder of Sharon Verzeni. The DNA of Moussa Sangare, the 31-year-old who confessed to Verzeni’s murder, is being compared to the genetic profiles found on Yara’s body, sparking new investigations and raising questions about the potential connections between the two cases.
Lawyer Claudio Salvagni, who defends Massimo Bossetti, the man sentenced to life imprisonment for Yara’s murder, has expressed his support for further investigations, stating that if the Public Prosecutor’s Office finds new elements, it is right to investigate further. Salvagni believes that public prosecutors have an obligation to find elements in favor of the convicted person and the person under investigation, and that the truth must be sought, even if it is uncomfortable.
Potential Links Between Sangare and the Gambirasio Case
When asked if he believes there are links between Sangare and the Gambirasio case, Salvagni replied that only the Prosecutor’s Office can know for certain. However, he notes that the two murders share similar circumstances, with both victims being young girls killed in the same area, and that this similarity deserves further investigation.
What Would Change for Bossetti if There Was a Positive Match?
If a positive match is found between Sangare’s genetic profile and the DNA found on Yara, it would be sensational news, according to Salvagni. This would imply that Sangare could also be implicated in Yara’s murder, and to exclude Bossetti’s responsibility, it would be necessary to contest the DNA of Unknown 1, or find that the two, Sangare and Bossetti, had no point of contact and thus exclude any possible complicity.
Salvagni highlights the complexity of the situation, stating that even if there were a confession by Sangare, it would not be entirely sufficient to exclude Bossetti, as they could believe that his DNA is there anyway and that his responsibility would still stand.
Unraveling the Mystery of Unknown 1
The DNA of Unknown 1, which was found on Yara’s body, has been a crucial piece of evidence in the Gambirasio case. If a positive match is found between Sangare’s genetic profile and the DNA of Unknown 1, it could lead to a re-examination of the evidence and potentially exonerate Bossetti.
However, the investigation is still in its early stages, and it remains to be seen whether the DNA analysis will yield any concrete results. The Public Prosecutor’s Office will need to carefully consider the evidence and weigh the implications of any potential links between the two cases.
The Search for Truth and Justice
The Yara Gambirasio murder case has been a source of fascination and horror for many, and the potential links to the Sharon Verzeni murder have added a new layer of complexity to the investigation. As the investigation unfolds, one thing is certain: the search for truth and justice must continue, no matter how uncomfortable or difficult it may be.
