Mysteriously, in Haut-Vernet, people hide behind their shutters. Moreover, the profile of Emile’s dad raises questions.
A week following the disappearance of little Emile, who was with his grandparents during a meeting which brought together a dozen uncles and aunts, the criminal trail gained weight. And in this context, the village but also the family are the target of suspicion on the part of a French population still traumatized by the affair of little Grégory Villemin.

The hamlet of Haut-Vernet is today in dire straits. Since Friday, it has been cordoned off by the gendarmes. François Balique, the mayor of the town, explained that he took this decision in order to “protect families and channel possible curiosity tourism.”

A priori, the human race legitimizes this decision. Mystery dramas always generate their share of unhealthy behavior. Moreover, we also know that fake kitties have been opened online in the name of Émile. The public prosecutor threatened to open an investigation for fraud.
But wasn’t the hamlet also closed for the purposes of the investigation? And, at the same time, to keep investigative journalists away?
The ghettoization of places indeed raises questions. According to Dominique Rizet, police-justice consultant for BFMTV, “filtering” would be less suspicious. “People have to ask themselves if there are things to hide. Why don’t we have access to this place? What’s going on behind the shutters? Does anyone know anything?”

Another disturbing element: the profile of Emile’s dad. During the search, many volunteers joined the police and Emile’s family to collect clues. Many question the attitude of Emile’s father during these excavations. “He was very well dressed, which surprised us. He wore a turtleneck, and dress pants. He was very authoritative and would raise his voice to reprimand people who he didn’t think had the right attitude. It surprised everyone a bit.”
Emile’s father is a former member of Action Française and is a very active activist in the small group Bastion social Marseille, an extreme right-wing association. In 2018, this activism earned him an appearance before the court of Aix-en-Provence, for an alleged attack on people of foreign origin. He had finally been released. In 2021, during the regional elections, his name appeared on an electoral list in support of Eric Zemmour.
We also know that the family, very pious, accused by local residents of being a “sect”, lived in a very discreet way, “almost self-sufficient”. In this kind of configuration, the craziest fantasies always find fertile ground…
