An anonymous recorded sound implicated in the appearance of several neurological symptoms forming the “Havana syndrome” which affected military personnel and personnel of the embassies of the United States and Canada in Cuba, in 2016, and in other other countries since, notably in China. Several years later, some American officials still suffer from a chronic and debilitating form of the disease.
The mystery of the “acoustic attacks” once morest Americans abroad finally elucidated?
A sudden syndrome that has affected American embassies
The victims of Havana syndrome all have one thing in common: the sudden appearance of a loud sound, a feeling of pressure and vibration in the head, hearing pain and migraines. For the majority of those affected, these symptoms would have appeared following hearing the sound below (rest assured, listening to it will not make you sick), a sound perceived as coming from a specific direction and audible only in certain places .
In addition to these sensations present in all cases, tinnitus, nausea or even vision problems have been observed for some. The clinical picture is very heterogeneous depending on the patient and does not fully correspond to a disease listed in the medical literature. The symptoms suggest damage to the eighth cranial nerve, the auditory nerve or the bony labyrinth, the set of natural cavities in the temporal bone which is one of the constituents of the inner ear (along with the membranous labyrinth).
The origin of Havana syndrome
What caused these symptoms? According the different reports carried out by the American authorities on the Havana syndrome, they would be compatible with the known side effects of exposure to pulsed radio frequencies, which by interacting with surrounding objects changed frequency and became audible to the human ear. The great diversity of symptoms between patients might then be due to differences in exposure and the body’s reaction to these frequencies. US authorities have identified other factors that might have contributed to the onset of Havana syndrome such as insecticide spraying or the Zika virus, responsible for an epidemic outbreak in Havana in 2016. The responsibility of these two factors in the occurrence of the disease is still considered unlikely.
As for the origin of the famous sound, many theories have circulated: a hostile attack on the United States with a new acoustic weapon, the stridulations of a species of local cricket Anurogryllus celerinictus. Two explanations considered improbable by a document declassified in March 2023 ; that of radiofrequency is commonly accepted as being at the origin of the Havana syndrome.
