Unraveling the Enchanting ‘Gaida’ Festival: A Journey Through Music, Dance, and Timeless Traditions

In its concert programs, the festival will invite you to discover “Duendė” – that mysterious, powerful force that strongly affects the inside of a person and causes catharsis, according to the press release of the organizers.

The 34th international topical music festival “Gaida” October 19 the concert of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by the world-famous violinist Leila Josefowicz (Canada, USA) and the famous German conductor Peter Rundel will begin in the new LVSO concert hall.

The Vilnius State Choir will take part in the concert. The program includes three premieres in Lithuania: “Recordare” for choir and orchestra by Lithuanian author Justė Janulytė, who lives in Italy, “Keilschrift” for symphony orchestra by the guest composer of the festival, famous German composer Enno Poppe, and Luca Francesconi’s Concerto for violin and orchestra “Duende”, which gave the subtitle to the entire festival. About Leila Josefowicz, the Los Angeles Times wrote that when the violinist plays, “it’s worth looking to see if her feet are off the ground.” And when she “falls to the ground, she transforms into a stormy rocker” whose “virtuosity floats in waves of joyous energy.”

October 20 the music of Japanese composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto will come to Vilnius. The New York band Bang On A Can All-Stars (USA) will host a concert at the National Philharmonic – the European premiere of the Ryuichi Sakamoto: 1996 project. Live music from Ryuichi Sakamoto’s world-famous and Oscar- and BAFTA-winning films: The Last Emperor, Windy Mountain, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Under the Sky and many more. The world premiere of this concert took place this year in New York.

October 23 An extraordinary evening will take place in the New Hall of the Lithuanian National Drama Theater – a stage musical performance “Rolandas Rastauskas. Reconciliation”, in which Tomas Kutavičius (piano), Petras Vyšniauskas (saxophones), Arkadij Gotesman (percussion), Darius Meškauskas (actor) will participate. The world premiere of a new work by T. Kutavičiaus and selected poems by Rolandas Rastauskas (1954–2024) by Czesław Miłosz and RoRa’s own texts will be performed.

According to Giedras Radvilavičiūtė, the great effect of RoRa was to create a celebration. This Gaida festival event was also conceived together with RoRa. He was very happy with the assembled team of performers, he himself selected and sent his versts to Cz. Miłosz’s poems, which he was about to read. The stage poetic-musical performance will take place under the title “Reconciliations” created by him.

The very next day, on October 24the festival audience will be treated to another special event – the famous Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, which belongs to the elite of European and world orchestras, will perform in Vilnius. The orchestra, which has been in existence for almost seven decades, will turn Vilnius into one of the musical capitals of Europe. The concert will be conducted by Sylvain Cambreling, one of the most famous conductors of our time.

The event is also unique in that the world-famous pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will perform together with the orchestra – in the second part, the French piano virtuoso will play Bela Bartok’s Concerto for piano and orchestra no. 2. Unsuk Chin, Wolfgang Rihm and Justė Janulytė’s works will also be performed for the first time in Lithuania. The concert will take place in the new LVSO concert hall, and for the first time the elite European orchestra will be able to try out its praised acoustics.

October 25 Violin virtuoso Hugo Ticciati (Sweden, UK) will perform in Gaida, who will not only play solo with the orchestra, but will also conduct the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

The National Philharmonic will perform the world premieres of two works for violin and string orchestra by Loreta Narvilaitė and Žibuoklė Martinaitytė. The audience will also hear Caroline Shaw’s impressive “Entr’acte” and Justė Janulytė’s “Confluere” (premiere in Lithuania). And the dessert of the concert is the suite “There Will Be Blood” by Jonny Greenwood, one of the leaders of the legendary group “Radiohead”, from the music for the famous Paul Thomas Anderson film (premiere in Lithuania).

The same on October 25 in the evening, the performance of the highly anticipated British electronic music artist Rival Consoles will take place in the contemporary culture space “Kablys+Kultūra”, before which the Lithuanian “El Chico Fuendre” will present the premiere of their audiovisual project.

October 26 French electronic music master Franck Vigroux will appear in the “Kablys+Kultūra” space, who will organize an intensive audiovisual performance “Atotal” with his creative partner, video artist Antoine Schmitt. In the evening, the premiere of the audiovisual project “Grid” by Philipp Henkel (Germany) will take place in Lithuania.

October 27 St. At St. Catherine’s Church, the cellist group “Cello Club” will present a new performance filled with spatial meanings. The concert program includes even three world premieres. New works for eight cellos by Enno Poppe, Rytis Mažulis and Justė Janulytė will be performed, as well as well-known works by Kaija Saariah and Steve Reich. The concert of Cello Club, the only cellist collective in Lithuania, will be held at the Gaida festival on a special, spacious stage.

Festival October 29 The concert of world cello star Nicolas Altstaedt, violinist Dalia Kuznetsovaitė and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra will continue at the National Philharmonic, conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas. In the evening program: the world premiere of Rūta Vitkauskaitė’s Concerto for violin and orchestra, the work “Altbau” by festival guest composer Enno Poppe (première in Lithuania) and the Lithuanian premiere of the famous Esa-Pekka Salonen Concerto for cello and orchestra.

October 30 The highlight of Berlin’s new music scene – ensemble mosaik – will appear at the Art Print Shop, which will perform perhaps the most impressive piece of the last decade by the famous German composer and conductor Enno Poppe, Rudfunk (“Radio”) – a one-hour electronic music composition for 9 synthesizers. The partner of the concert is the Goethe Institute.

October 31 Gaida will present the Spanish violin star Leticija Moreno in the LVSO concert hall.

“She has the grace of a flamenco dancer, the strength of character of an Andalusian cantaora singer and the thoughtful look of Pedro Almodóvar’s characters,” Le Figaro newspaper wrote about the violinist.

With the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Leticia Moreno will perform the internationally acclaimed Jimmy López Concerto for Violin and Orchestra “Aurora” (premiere in Lithuania). The orchestra, conducted by maestro Robert Šerveniks, is also preparing the world premiere of Silvija Miliūnaitė’s piece “Games of Time” and the Lithuanian premiere of Justė Janulytė’s “Sleeping Patterns”.

November 6 The visitors of the LVSO concert hall “Gaidas” are waiting for the extraordinary performance of electronic music legend Jeff Mills (USA) with live music performers “Tomorrow Comes The Harvest”. An icon of Detroit’s cult techno scene, producer, DJ, composer, Jeff Mills has not limited himself to electronic music in recent decades, he creates spectacular shows that intertwine music, contemporary art, pop culture, design and science fiction, and his concerts are held in the most important concert halls and festivals of the world.

The last event of the festival “Gaida Post Scriptum” will take place December 5 In the LVSO concert hall, the famous American singer and creator Caroline Shaw will perform with the New York percussion group “So Percussion”. Caroline Shaw’s concerts receive excellent reviews from critics and are a huge success among listeners. She has even received several Grammy awards, and at the age of just thirty, she won the prestigious Pulitzer Music Prize (2013), becoming the youngest recipient of this award.
