Abbreviation CRISPR (pronounced “crisper”) first appeared in the 1980s. Spanish molecular biologist Francisco Mojica studied bacteria living in salt water and saw strange sequences in their DNA that were repeated many times. At that time, it was not possible to understand why such structures were needed. They were called CRISPR – Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats.
