Unraveling the Complexity: Understanding the Immune Response to Covid-19 Worldwide

2023-09-01 17:28:36

Between no symptoms and death, covid has triggered a full range of responses depending on who has been infected. This is why the virus and its variants are at the heart of a vast study on the immune response. “Researchers from the Institut Pasteur, CNRS and Collège de France, in collaboration with researchers around the world1, have focused on the factors behind the diversity of immune responses to SARS-CoV- 2, among populations of Central Africa, Western Europe and Eastern Asia. They show that prior infection with cytomegalovirus, and human genetic diversity induced by natural selection influence the immune response to SARS-CoV-2, as well as the severity of Covid-19. Understanding the causes of these different responses could have applications in the care of patients during future epidemics. These results are published on August 9, 2023 in the journal Nature”, explains the Institut Pasteur in a press release.

The varieties of factors that impact the immune system are very wide: “These differences may be due to the environment or to distinct histories that have shaped the genetic diversity of populations, particularly through natural selection. In this study published in the journal Nature, scientists sought the causes of the plurality of responses to the SARS-CoV-2 virus depending on the geographic, ethnic, and genetic origin of populations. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the SARS-CoV-2 virus was responsible for a variety of symptoms, ranging from no manifestation to death. Although advanced age remains a primary risk factor, male gender, comorbidities, and various human genetic and immunological factors also contribute to disease severity. »
