Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 9 of “Severance,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
The penultimate episode of “Severance” Season 2 has left fans wondering about the fate of one of the show’s most beloved couples: Irving and Burt.Their story takes a dramatic turn, leaving their future uncertain.
A Farewell at the Train Station
In a poignant scene, Irving and Burt, portrayed by John Turturro and Christopher Walken, share what appears to be a final goodbye at a train station. Burt, in a gesture of love or perhaps guilt, purchases irving a one-way ticket, urging him to escape to the unknown. This act immediately raises questions: Why is irving fleeing, and what role does Burt play in his departure?
Reunion and Revelation: A Dinner of Secrets
Earlier in the season, after the permanent retirement of their “innie” counterparts,Irving and Burt reconnect in the outside world. Burt, along with his husband Fields (John Noble), invites Irving to a rather unsettling dinner. It’s during this encounter that cracks begin to appear in burt’s facade.
Burt seems to downplay his tenure at Lumon, admitting to being a “scoundrel.” He even reveals that his decision to undergo severance stemmed from a priest’s assurance that his innie would face separate judgment, offering a potential path to heaven. The dinner’s unsettling atmosphere is further amplified by Burt and Fields’ peculiar pet name for each other, “Atilla,” a reference to the infamous Hun ruler, adding a layer of dark humor and unease.
Confrontation and Confession
Episode 9 brings a confrontation. Irving returns home to find Burt in his apartment, engrossed in Irving’s notebooks. One entry reads: “Goodman may have participated as a low-level Lumon enforcer or goon.” Burt’s reaction is telling: “Lumon goon, that stings. We never used words like that.” Irving, however, has reassessed his view, stating, “I know now that I was wrong. I know you’re not with them.”
The One-Way Ticket: Escape from Lumon?
Burt convinces Irving to “take a ride” with him. During this ride, Burt claims he only served as a driver for Lumon, remaining ignorant of the passengers’ fates upon arrival. Burt brings Irv to a train station and buys him a ticket. “This line goes as far as you can go,” Burt says. “I can’t know where you get off, and you can never come back to Kier.”
A critical question arises: Is Burt genuinely helping Irving escape the clutches of lumon, or is this another layer of deception? The implication is that Lumon is pursuing Irving, perhaps becuase of sensitive data he possesses. burt’s actions suggest a possible attempt at redemption for past misdeeds, but his true motives remain ambiguous.
A Love Unrequited… For Now
Irving’s vulnerability shines through when he confesses that he has never been loved before and expresses his readiness to begin a life with Burt, despite the absence of shared memories of their “innie” romance. As irv leans in for a kiss, Burt recoils, stating, “We can’t.” Offering only a handshake, Burt bids him farewell with the words, “Bon voyage, buddy.” This tender farewell, laden with unspoken emotions, leaves viewers questioning whether this is truly the end for these characters.
the Creator’s Outlook: Uncertainty Remains
When asked if this marks the end of Burt and Irving’s story, the executive producer and director, Ben Stiller, stated, “For now it is indeed.”
stiller adds perspective, “Lumon is a very powerful company, and Burt knows that.” According to Stiller, “He makes this choice, and we don’t know what’s going to happen to Burt after that.”
In regards to Burt’s real alligance, stiller said, “I get the feeling that what he’s doing is definitely on his own, and he’s probably putting himself at some risk by doing that.”
What Lies Ahead?
The ambiguous nature of burt’s actions and Stiller’s comments leave the door open for potential future developments. Is Burt truly seeking redemption, or is he still entangled in Lumon’s web of deceit? The answers, it truly seems, will have to wait for the next chapter of “Severance.”

Severance Season 2: Decoding Burt and irving’s Fate – An Interview wiht TV critic Eleanor Vance
The latest episode of “Severance” Season 2 has left viewers reeling, especially concerning the complex relationship between Burt and Irving. to help us unpack it all, we spoke with Eleanor Vance, seasoned TV critic from Screen Insights.
The Train Station Goodbye: Redemption or Deception?
Archyde: Eleanor, the scene where Burt buys irving a one-way ticket is pivotal. Is this burt’s attempt at redemption for potentially harmful actions at Lumon, or could it be a calculated move within a larger deception?
Eleanor Vance: That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? The beauty of “Severance” is its ambiguity. Burt’s motivations are shrouded in mystery. The one way ticket reads as a act of love with no promise of return. But,knowing Lumon, nothing is ever straightforward. Whether Burt is truly helping Irving escape, or subtly guiding him into another trap, remains a key point of suspense.
The Dinner Scene: Unveiling Burt’s Past?
Archyde: The dinner with Burt and Fields was undeniably unsettling. Burt’s admission of being a “scoundrel,” his strange pet name “Atilla,” for Fields, and downplaying Lumon, added a layer of intrigue. How do you interpret this?
Eleanor Vance: The dinner was a masterclass in creating discomfort. It’s a glimpse into Burt’s attempts to justify his past actions, or perhaps to rewrite history in his own mind. The “Atilla” Pet name and is clearly a device that signals darkness. The dinner felt very off an perhaps a point in which the audience really starts to mistrust Burt Goodman.
“Lumon Goon”: Burt’s True Allegiance
Archyde: Irving confronts Burt about his potential role as a “Lumon goon.” burt denies the label, but his reaction almost confirms it. Has Burt genuinely changed, or is he simply a skilled manipulator?
eleanor Vance: burt’s discomfort with the term is telling. Also Irving seems to back pedal on the statement. The fact that Irving takes back his previous thoughts about Burt suggest a change in Irving that shows hope.the uncertainty of Burt, and the possibility that he is a changed man, is just another question in the complex story.
Ben Stiller’s Perspective: Uncertainty and Risk
Archyde: Ben Stiller mentioned that Burt is likely putting himself at risk by helping Irving. How does this affect the interpretation of his actions?
Eleanor Vance: Stiller’s insight adds weight to the possibility of Burt’s redemption arc. If Burt is indeed acting against Lumon’s interests,it signifies a significant shift in his character and raises the stakes dramatically. It suggests that the love for Irving has changed Burt as a person.
The Unrequited Love: Is This Really Goodbye?
Archyde: Irving’s vulnerability and Burt’s rejection leave viewers emotionally invested. What do you predict for their future?
Eleanor Vance: the unrequited love between Irving and Burt creates emotional anticipation for future episodes, and perhaps seasons. Burt’s rejection of Irving is the ultimate test of his love, but is also a potential way to release irving from the situation. the ending could be a way to keep Irving safe, but only furture episodes will tell.
Archyde: What are your predictions for future developments on “severance”, and where would you like to see the series develop?
