The United Kingdom is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave for the month of September, with the thermometer expected to exceed 30°C once more on Friday for the fifth day in a row.
According to its forecast, ‘many regions will remain hot or very hot until Saturday, with the heat becoming more confined to the south-east of the country on Sunday and Monday’.
Temperatures might thus exceed 32°C on Saturday in the south-east of England, with also risks of intense thunderstorms in places during the weekend, before a return to a more usual climate at the start of next week .
On Thursday, the temperature already reached 32.6°C in Wisley in Surrey (south London), beating this year’s maximum of 32.2°C observed on June 10 and 25.
The absolute record for a month of September dates from 1906, with 35.6°C observed in South Yorkshire.
Beaches taken by storm
To cope, British people have stormed the beaches of the south of the country in recent days, such as in Brighton, a popular vacation spot for Londoners.
At London Zoo, staff are trying to cool the animals by making the Asian lions suck on blood and meat ice cream, while elsewhere in the capital some have taken out parasols to protect themselves from the sun.
Authorities have issued an orange heat alert in England within the health service, fearing the consequences for the most vulnerable people.
‘As our climate changes due to human actions, heatwaves like this are becoming more frequent and intense,’ warns the Met Office.
