2023-09-14 05:01:18

In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia, the Regional Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, revealed details of the health and humanitarian situation in the areas affected by Storm “Daniel” that Libya witnessed during the past few days.

Al-Mandhari said that Libya is going through an unprecedented humanitarian crisis due to Storm “Daniel,” which caused the largest and worst floods the country has witnessed in the last century, as the resulting massive damage affected between 1.5 and 1.8 million people in the eastern region of the country.

The mayor of Derna, eastern Libya, confirmed to Sky News Arabia that the death toll from the floods caused by Storm Daniel might exceed 20,000.

In the same context, Al-Mandhari explained that “all those affected by the floods are in urgent need of urgent support, basic health services and life-saving interventions, and those affected are also at increased risk of water-borne diseases and other diseases that spread in similar circumstances.”

This comes at a time when relief teams prepared mass graves to bury the bodies recovered from Derna, following the city was subjected to major destruction.

Disastrous indicators

The Regional Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean revealed the data recorded by the organization regarding the numbers of victims and the extent of losses in Derna, at a number of points:

According to reported figures, 3,400 people were killed as of Tuesday, and the death toll is likely to reach 15,000.
With numbers growing like this, response teams are in urgent need of body bags, as well as basic living supplies for survivors.
The number of missing people rose from regarding 5,000 to 9,000 people as of Tuesday.
The floods destroyed infrastructure and public facilities, disrupted roads between regions, and cut off electricity and communications.
Access to affected areas faces challenges due to closed roads and areas completely flooded.
Several hospitals were flooded and were completely or partially out of service, requiring the evacuation of patients.
Overall, the health implications are enormous, but the situation is still unfolding, and an in-depth assessment of the health situation in the affected areas is required.
WHO is working with the Libyan Ministry of Health and the National Center for Disease Control, to strengthen risk communication and community engagement activities during and following floods.
The organization is ready to support the response to this disaster, and is in close contact through the WHO country office in Libya at the Ministry of Health, to identify urgent needs and provide support in the health response in the affected areas, especially since the current catastrophic situation requires the solidarity of the donor community and all partners.
