Usually, heat waves occur earlier in the year. Remember, the latest was a few months ago, in mid-June. It had lasted 10 days.
Pascal Mormal, meteorologist at the Royal Institute of Meteorology (IRM), indicates that it will be necessary to wait until Friday noon to confirm 100% the heat wave. “There is no doubt, from 12-1 p.m., we will be able to speak of a heat wave in Belgium because it will be at least 25 degrees”he says.
“It’s completely unprecedented. Since observations have been made in Uccle since 1892, 47 heat waves have been experienced, but so far none in September. In a way, it’s worrying, because such a temperature anomaly has to be worrying enough.“, he explains.
“For a week, we have a temperature anomaly that is 8 to 10 degrees above normal for the season. It is considerable. So, yes, it happened to have one or two days of heat so late in the season, but here, we are in an unprecedented sequence. We are on the one hand in a heat wave and in addition, we are in the 3rd which exceeds 30 degrees. We’ll probably have another one or two by Sunday.“, adds the meteorologist.
“Until now, we had not had more than two at 30 degrees in September. This is a unique event taking place right now. Just with the first 10 days of September, we are on the way to beating the previous record, which dates from September 1911. At the time, we measured an average of 20.7 degrees” term-t-il.
