Unprecedented Heat Dome Engulfs Central and Southern US, Threatening Power Grids: Expert Analysis

The record-breaking heat wave that continues in Texas and Mexico is set to spread across the central and southern United States in the next few days, and even as far north as Illinois.

Hot air is trapped under a huge anticyclonic mass and remains there for about two weeks, a phenomenon oftenheat domecalled. Some meteorologists have dubbed the phenomenon the “Domes of Doom,” due to its impact on energy and agricultural markets.

Heatwaves in both Texas and Mexico have put power grids in jeopardy, causing power outages and forcing utilities to call for cutbacks. Electricity demand in Texas hit a record high on the afternoon of the 26th. It highlights how global warming is stressing infrastructure built for the climate of another era.
