Unprecedented attack on wiretapping just days before the polls

Fierce criticism of the Secretary of State, who said that if he himself was monitored, then the law was broken halfway across the planet

Megaton bombs by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias essentially against the Maximos Palace, against the background of the scandalous case of wiretapping. Just 25 days before the elections of the simple proportional, Nikos Dendias made a harsh criticism, saying sharply that if the head of Greek diplomacy was monitored, then the law was violated halfway around the world, while he spoke of a “criminal act”.

He also shot – indirectly, but very clearly – at Kostis Hatzidakis, who, although it was proven that he was a victim of surveillance by the Predator, did not ask for an investigation to shed light on the case. Speaking to Newsbomb.gr and Olga Tremi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs revealed that his ministerial counterparts contacted him about the wiretapping issue with obvious concern. It is recalled that last November, when the news broke that the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs was among the persons monitored with the illegal Predator software, there was a major upheaval in international diplomacy, as all of the minister’s conversations have become potentially exposed.

Although he stated yesterday that he did not find that he was being watched, he added that “I cannot accept the certainty that there was someone who went to the extreme of watching the foreign minister of a country and violated the law and order in half the countries of the world – and in some of them this is not perceived as something particularly light” and he added that such a thing would make the person carrying out the surveillance accountable for a criminal act in the degree of a felony halfway across the planet.

“I think that, despite what has been released, there would be the logic of self-restraint in someone not to make themselves accountable for a felony criminal act halfway across the planet,” he commented. In fact, as he revealed, he had to reassure his counterparts, such as the United States of America’s foreign ministers Anthony Blinken and Mike Pompeo, but also almost all of his counterparts.

Questions

“Yes, I took questions and reassured my interlocutors,” he revealed. At the same time, when asked about the five-month ongoing investigation regarding the export of the Predator, Mr. Dendias said that the process has not yet been completed, pointing to the way in which the Greek Public Administration operates as the culprit. As Nikos Dendias stated, he cannot do anything about it, as it would be considered interference.

“There may be little I can tell you, the last thing I should do is to interfere. Even intervention for acceleration is intervention. And it could turn against me, that I want to close the case quickly” he argued. In fact, he meaningfully noted that the competent former Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Giannis Smyrlis, has left his position. It should be noted that Yiannis Smyrlis is now deputy director general of New Democracy, with responsibility for the smooth conduct of the elections.

The “lightnings” of Nikos Dendias have caused intense embarrassment and discomfort in the Maximos Palace, however, for now, it has not manifested itself publicly. Besides, Akis Skertsos, when asked about this during the usual briefing for political editors, limited himself to stating that “because the sworn examination is being conducted, no comment can be made until it is completed. That’s my comment.”

It is reminded that this is not the first time that Nikos Dendias “hits” on the issue of wiretapping, although yesterday he actually made his harshest statements. When his name was involved in the scandal, moreover, he was limited to the sibyl report that “my collaboration with the prime minister is a lasting collaboration and characterized by mutual trust. Beyond that, I am completely covered by the Prime Minister’s assurance that plenty of light will be shed.”
