Unplugging the Saga: A Review of Decadence and the Decline of Jigsaw

The observation is as distressing as it is obvious: it is high time to unplug the saga Decadence once and for all, especially following she gave us a particularly painful and forbidding tenth chapter.

Jigsaw is back. There was a time when this phrase filled lovers of hemoglobin and strong emotions with joy. But today, it is with a long sigh that we welcome it, discouraged to learn that we are still trying to extract juice from a saga already bled dry.

We still restart the machine for a tenth time, just to bring back John Kramer, the man behind the nickname, and his barbaric torture mechanisms. And to do this, we go back in time to portray the plot of Decadence between those of the first two chapters of the series, a time when the character was still very much alive.

Tortures in Mexico

So we find Jigsaw as he flies to Mexico on the promise of a revolutionary treatment for his incurable cancer. But when he realizes that the instigators of this medical trip have cheated him, he will use his mechanics to teach them a good lesson, served of course with great torture and unspeakable physical torment.

The problem? In addition to fueling incongruities more than ever, this tenth chapter fits more or less coherently into the narrative framework of the franchise. We quickly realize that this contortion of temporal space was ultimately only a pretext to bring back Jigsaw and Amanda Young, two leading figures of Decadence. A good idea on paper, but unfortunately poorly executed.

Smell of reheated

Worse still, we feel weariness – or laziness? – in the development of the traps to which the victims of Decadence ; They smell reheated here, some seeming to us to be nothing more than vulgar variants or amalgamations of those used in the previous chapters.

Fans of hemoglobin will, however, be happy to learn that it is spilled copiously and in circumstances more sinister than what the franchise expects. Decadence got them used to it. Because the excesses of violence are even more barbaric and presented with a sick insistence which puts a strain on the most sensitive stomachs. On the other hand, these scenes are now devoid of any tension or emotional charge, the filmmaker Kevin Greutert clearly only seeking to provoke disgust and unease at all costs.

So please, let us once and for all resign ourselves to letting John Kramer – and his many henchmen – rest in peace.
