Unplugged and Unstoppable: How to Unlock Google Maps’ Hidden Offline Navigation

Imagine you’re traveling in a car somewhere you’ve never been before and relying on Google Maps to get to your destination, but suddenly the internet stops working?

Needless to say, internet service is not very good or not available in different parts of Pakistan or other countries.

But the good thing is that you can use Google Maps in different places even without internet.

However, if you change your travel route, then this feature of Google Maps does not prove useful.

If you are traveling to an area you are not familiar with, using the offline maps feature can help.

This feature is very easy to use and Google’s service works just like it does on the Internet.

So how does this feature work?

First, note that this feature does not require you to download the entire Google Maps, but rather a specific area or city, country or region map before your trip.

For this, open Google Maps on Android phone or iPhone and click on the profile picture on the top right.

There select Offline Maps and then Select Your Own Map option.

With the help of your fingers, select the specific region or city whose map you want to download.

When you zoom in or out on this map, Google will tell you how much phone storage it will need to download. If you are satisfied with it, click on the download button.

If this method seems difficult, you can search the name of the city or any other area in Google Maps and then click on the download option there. However, this method works only on iPhone.

Downloading a map of an area will require connecting to Wi-Fi, if you want to do this on mobile data, go to the Offline Maps page and click the gear icon in the top right corner.

There, click on Where to Download Offline Maps and select the Over Wi-Fi and Mobile Network option.

After doing this you will be able to use Google Maps in certain areas even without internet.

But offline maps won’t show travel time or alternative route options, but it will definitely know how long the journey might take.

Offline maps will not have transit, bicycle or walking routes available, only driving directions will be available.
