Romania’s Prime Minister:

Because of Orbán’s speech at the summer university in Bad Tuschnad in Transylvania, the Romanian Prime Minister also had to answer questions from journalists.

Marcel Ciolacu, however, preferred to focus on bilateral relations and did not want to comment further on the speech. “That is his business. Did he say anything about Romania?” asked Ciolacu, who had met with Orbán the day before in Bucharest. At least he let it be known that certain circles had – as they had done in previous years – called for the Hungarian Prime Minister to be declared persona non grata in Romania. The Romanian Prime Minister does not understand all the fuss; after all, Orbán said nothing different from what he usually says at home or in Brussels.

Much more important are the good neighbourly (and economic) relations between Romania and Hungary, which is Bucharest’s third main partner in the EU. Ciolacu said of the planned project for a high-speed rail link between Bucharest and Budapest that the costs were not important, the positive effect on economic growth was crucial. Romania wants to become a full member of the Schengen area by the end of the year, something Hungary is known to support vociferously.
