Unlucky Qualifying in Montreal: Alpine Drivers’ Frustration and Achievements on the Track

Both Alpine drivers were unlucky in qualifying in Montreal, as rivals interfered with them on the track, for which they were subsequently fined. But Pierre Gasly was unlucky much more, he found himself in a very risky situation created on the track by Carlos Sainz.

Pierre Gasly (17th): “To be honest, I think that there are no words that might express all my frustration and annoyance. In training you put in so much effort, preparing for the main events of the weekend, and in qualifying you try to give your all.

We did everything right, and that lap of mine was good enough, I might show a sixth result in the first session, despite the fact that due to traffic I lost a couple of tenths. At least I would have been in the top ten, but Carlos Sainz acted completely wrong on the track.

I was on a fast lap and he stayed on the racing line, which is completely unacceptable, so I just don’t have words to describe what happened there.

During qualifying we rely on the information we get from the team, but preparing for the Canadian Grand Prix, we knew that this is a dangerous track, because before the last chicane of the circle there is a cluster of cars here and everyone interferes with each other.

In such situations, it is necessary to show increased attention and at least shift from the racing trajectory. But not only did Carlos interfere with me, it was also a very dangerous situation. What if I hit him at 300 km/h? He put himself at risk, not just me.

As a result, I ended up in 17th position, and this will definitely affect my race. Of course, Sainz should be fined, although in any case we will not be returned to the positions that we might rise to today.

Esteban Ocon (6th): “Personally, I’m in a great mood, the qualification went great, especially if you remember where we were at the end of training. We didn’t work that much on the track, and we didn’t drive intermediate tires at all in the morning, so we didn’t have any preparation.

I was relieved when I made it to the final session, and the fact that I was able to climb to the 6th position is generally a special achievement. Many thanks to the team – we did everything that needed to be done, and our efforts paid off.

I repeat, I didn’t have much preparation, so I just went to the track and tried to remember my last year’s experience on this track. And also this morning I watched the recordings from the on-board video cameras made on this track for an hour and a half and figured out which approach should be applied.
