Unlocking the Potential: Developing Algerian Women’s Football on the International Stage

2023-08-07 22:46:12

On the sidelines of the round of 16 of the World Cup between France and the Atlas Lionesses on Tuesday, midfielder Kenza Dali (57 caps, 11 goals) spoke at a press conference, not without referring to the country of his parents, born in Algeria.

The Aston Villa player (Women’s Super League) first wanted to highlight the development of women’s football in Africa. “I am very happy to see three African teams in the 8th round (South Africa and Nigeria have just been eliminated, editor’s note). Morocco plays very good football, we saw Nigeria with enormous physical and technical qualities.” before discussing its origins and therefore the Algerian team, not qualified for this world Cup.
I know the coach of Algeria well (Farid Benstiti, ex-coach of PSG and OL, editor’s note). I think she’s also moving forward on her side. This World Cup and the one in Qatar show that we can count on the African nations for boys and girls.

A resource problem?

Hard to believe that the potential among Algerian players does not exist. This country, like neighboring Morocco, idolizes football. However, the women’s selection has never gone beyond the group stage at the CAN and was even absent from the last edition. Not to mention this case of non-registration for the Olympics… If the national men’s team, winner of the CAN 2019, is popular with the Federation (FAF), this is not the case for the women’s selection. Proof : Anissa Lahmari (26 years old), who has dual nationality, had first opted a few months ago for the Greens (1 cape honored) before turning back by choosing to defend the colors of Morocco, with whom she shines in this moment.

Despite a certain potential and a passion for football in the country, a problem of means seems to be at the origin of the difficulties encountered by the Algerian women’s national team. Adapted infrastructures, a real training policy, increased financial investment and adequate supervision might allow the ladies Fennecs to develop and shine on the continental and international scene, like their male counterparts.
