“Nordic walking, 6km walk, 18-hole golf round, improved cognitive function… What is the key to maintaining a fast walking speed?” Entered 2023.10.18 09:10 Views 1,046 Entered 2023.10.18 09:10 Modified 2023.10.19 18:59 Views 1,046 Research has shown that playing just one 18-hole round of golf can help improve cognitive function.[사진=게티이미지뱅크]Research results have shown that cognitive function can be improved by just one exercise, such as golf (18 hole round), Nordic walking (6km), or walking (6km) while maintaining a brisk walking pace. An international research team from Finland, the UK, and Switzerland announced that this was the result of an experiment targeting healthy seniors over 65 years of age. Research teams from the University of Eastern Finland in Finland, the University of Edinburgh in the UK, and ETH Zurich in Switzerland participated in this study. The research team had 25 healthy elderly golfers aged 65 or older participate in three types of acute aerobic exercise: golf (18 hole round), Nordic walking (6 km), and walking (6 km). In particular, they were asked to maintain a walking speed equivalent to ‘fast walking’. The purpose is to determine the immediate effects of these exercises on the cognitive abilities and biological responses of healthy elderly people. Nordic walking is an exercise that involves walking with a pole. The research team evaluated the participants’ cognitive function with the ‘Trail Making Test (TMT)’ A and B, a tool widely used to evaluate the cognitive function of the elderly. TMT-A is used to measure lower cognitive functions such as attention and task processing speed, and TMT-B is used to measure more difficult executive functions such as task switching ability. The research team also collected blood samples from the participants and measured the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cathepsin B (CTSB). These numbers all reflect the benefits exercise has on the brain. Participants wore a fitness monitoring device to record data such as exercise distance, duration, pace, energy expenditure, and number of steps. The research team monitored their heart rates with an electrocardiogram sensor. The results of the study showed that cognitive function was significantly improved by doing just one of three types of exercise, including golf, Nordic walking, and walking. Nordic walking and walking were analyzed to be associated with improved executive function as a result of the TMT-B test. However, there was no significant effect on BDNF and CTSB levels. Dr. Julia Kettinen (Biomedical Research Institute Sports Kinesiology), the first author of the study, said, “Aerobic exercise appropriate for age, such as golf, Nordic walking, and walking, is good for maintaining and improving cognitive function in the elderly.” The results of this study (Cognitive and biomarker responses in healthy older adults to a 18-hole golf round and different walking types: a randomised cross-over study) were published in ≪BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine≫ It was published in
