If the unique example of the X-59 was unveiled in January, it is not just to show off the paint. Indeed, the plane is complete, and in tandem with Lockheed Martin, NASA will begin its tests soon. First the onboard electronics, then the flight systems as a whole and the engine tests expected in the first half. By summer or early fall, the American agency hopes to successfully carry out the first taxiing tests of the plane on the ground, to validate its behavior before the inaugural flight, which is still scheduled before the end of 2024.
So there is no question of relaxing for the teams now that the X-59 is out! Ultimately, the plane will be able to reach approximately 1,500 km/h, and naturally surpass the sound barrier, which is the objective of this program… Indeed the shape of the X-59 theoretically allows it to steer the shock wave produced during the supersonic passage to significantly attenuate it, or even make it imperceptible a few kilometers from the plane.
