In October 2023, the world happiness report ‘World Happiness Report’ in its 10th edition, registered Colombia in 66th place out of 146 countries analyzed. This study carried out by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, driven by data from the Gallup World Poll, by the World Bank and government entities, rated the country with 5,781 points, demonstrating unlike other reports that Colombians are not so happy due to to several factors.

Joy is a fundamental emotion that can have a powerful impact on everyday life and, in particular, on the ability to face and overcome problems. “Often when we are faced with difficult situations, we tend to focus on the negative aspects and get carried away by stress, anxiety and sadness. However, cultivating joy can provide us with a more balanced and constructive perspective, as well as numerous benefits for our physical and mental health.l” says María Paula Aguilera, psychologist, specialist in clinical psychology and personal self-efficacy at Universidad El Bosque.

On August 1, the World Day of Joy is celebrated, which was established in 2010 at the initiative of the Colombian Alfonso Becerra at a Cultural Management Congress held in Chile. Dr. Aguilera tells us regarding four important aspects to take into account regarding joy:

1. First of all, activities that generate this emotion It can be beneficial in managing feelings of stress and anxiety. When we’re happy, our bodies release endorphins and serotonin, chemicals that improve our mood and lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. This not only helps us feel happier in the present moment, but also strengthens our immune systems and makes us more resistant to the negative effects of chronic stress on our health. Experiencing joy on a regular basis helps us develop greater resilience in the face of adversity, allowing us to face problems with a more positive and proactive attitude.

2. Perform Wellness Practices that produce joy, can have a significant impact on our mental health. When we are mired in sadness or pessimism, our ability to reason and solve problems is limited. On the contrary, when we feel happy, we are more creative, flexible and able to find innovative solutions. Joy gives us a broader perspective and helps us see beyond difficulties, making it easier to find answers and overcome obstacles. Furthermore, joy allows us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and appreciation for the positive things around us, which increases our sense of well-being and satisfaction with life.

3. Promotes more positive and satisfying social relationships. When we are happy, we transmit a positive energy to the people around us, which creates an environment conducive to connection and mutual support. Strong, healthy relationships are a key factor in emotional well-being and can provide us with an important support system during difficult times.

4. It has a biological function. Numerous studies have shown that laughter and joy stimulate the cardiovascular system, improve lung function, strengthen the immune system, and lower blood pressure. Joy can even ease pain, as laughter releases endorphins, which act as natural pain relievers. Therefore, cultivating joy not only has benefits for our mental health, but it can also improve our physical health and increase our ability to deal with challenges more effectively.

Taking into account the above aspects, a person being happy revitalizes his mind and body. In this way, it provides the necessary energy to face the challenges that arise and acts as a motivating force that encourages you to move forward and find solutions instead of falling into negativity.
