Unlocking History: Rediscovering Prehistoric Treasures of Lesse River Bed

Each year, the searches become more and more precise. Aurélien Lacroix, site coordinator, is reaping the rewards. “This year, we touched the pre- and protohistoric layers. We found various objects and animal bones there, as well as four flint arrows which date back to 3500 years before our era: this is excellent news!”

60 years following the start of underwater excavations, the bed of the Lesse still contains vestiges. Marc Jasinski is one of its first explorers. “Physically, it was very hard. We didn’t have a suitable suit. But all you had to do was bend down to collect many witnesses from the Gallo-Roman era, the Renaissance and prehistory. It was the dream of every archaeologist.”

The finds are now on display at the PréhistoHan museum, at the entrance to the Domaine des Grottes. An exhibition of photographs retracing these sixty years of excavations is also visible at the exit of the Cave, in Han-sur-Lesse.
