In a new blog post, program manager Joshua Tucker describes Microsoft’s new DirectSR API as the “missing link” between gaming and ultra-resolution technologies, and says it should provide “a smoother, more efficient experience that scales across devices.”

The blog post comes two weeks following the Auto Ultra Resolution feature was discovered in a Windows 11 beta, which promised to “use artificial intelligence to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced detail.” Now, it looks like the feature will be plugged into existing super-resolution technologies like DLSS, FSR, and XeSS rather than offering a Windows-level alternative.
Microsoft says the new API will soon be available via a preview version of its Agility SDK, and it plans to offer a “sneak peek” at how to use DirectSR during a developer session at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC). The session will be held on March 21, and will include representatives from Microsoft, Nvidia, and AMD.
