A Conversation with Renowned Drummer Artis Orubs

just ahead of his highly anticipated “Jazz Session ar Artis Orubu” at the Great Amber Concert Hall in Liepaja, we had the pleasure of speaking with Artis Orubs about his musical journey, the upcoming performance, and the vibrant jazz scene in Liepaja. Joining us is Kaspars Ozols, a long-time friend and associate of Artis, to provide some context as well.

Archyde: Artis, welcome! We’re thrilled to have you. Could you tell us a bit about what inspired this “Jazz Session” in Liepaja?

Artis Orubs: Thank you for having me! this “Jazz session” is really a celebration of the Liepaja jazz community. I’ve been blessed to work and collaborate with some incredibly talented musicians here, and it felt like the right time to bring everyone together for a special night.

Archyde: The line-up is certainly extraordinary, featuring Atis Anderson, Henry Augustin Jacques Ley, and Raimonds Leja-Anderson. Kaspars, from your perspective, what makes this ensemble so unique?

Kaspars Ozols: What makes this ensemble unique is the blend of experience and fresh talent. Artis, of course, is a seasoned professional, having studied at prestigious institutions. He studied at emīla Dārziņa mūzikas school, Utrehtas and Amsterdamas konservatorijā, and also Jāzepa Vītola Latvijas Mūzikas akadēmijā. But Atis, Henry, and Raimonds bring such youthful energy and innovation to the music. It’s a really dynamic mix.

The Role of Education and Community in Jazz

archyde: The event is organized in collaboration with the Liepaja Music, Arts and Design High School. How crucial is it to foster the next generation of jazz musicians?

Artis Orubs: Absolutely crucial. These students are the future of jazz. Giving them a platform to perform alongside established musicians not only helps them grow but also injects new life and perspectives into the genre. The support from organizations like the State culture Capital Foundation and SIA “Lielais Dzintars” is invaluable in making these opportunities possible.

Archyde: You’ve performed in various settings throughout your career. How does the Liepaja jazz scene compare to others you’ve experienced?

Artis Orubs: Liepaja has a unique charm.There’s a real sense of community and a deep appreciation for music here. The artists are incredibly supportive of each other,and the audiences are always eager to engage. It’s a very special place to be a musician.

Artis Orubs: they can expect an evening filled with vibrant energy and exceptional music. We’ve prepared a program that showcases the diverse sounds of jazz, from classic standards to original compositions. It’s going to be a night of collaboration, improvisation, and pure musical joy.

Archyde: Artis,what’s one thing you hope the audience takes away from this event?
