The attackers took advantage of a moment of vulnerability in the platoon, throwing an explosive device towards the uniformed officers. According to Manuel Berrío, Secretary of Security of Bolívar, three of the injured soldiers require urgent medical attention and are being evacuated by helicopter to Barrancabermeja, Santander.

“During these operations, troops are exposed and visible, which criminals try to take advantage of. Of the nine injured soldiers, three need urgent hospital care,” said Berrío.

In the attack, the death of an anti-explosive tactical canine, known as Kathy, a labrador who was part of the security team, was also reported. “We mourn the loss of Kathy, who died in the incident,” added the Secretary of Security.

The Army’s tactical operations have intensified due to the constant clashes between the ELN and the Gulf Clan in the area, which have increased in recent weeks. “We are reinforcing security in the area, and although criminal groups do not like our presence, we will remain here with the public force,” Berrío concluded.
