The German rock band “Böhse Onkelz” will come to the concert at the Bischofshofen Schanzen area in September 2024. This is also the starting signal for the ambitious plans of the local ski club, which would like to use the area regularly in the summer for major events. “But everything with moderation and purpose. We definitely don’t want to overtax the city, the neighbors and the possibilities,” assures Manfred Schützenhofer Schützenhofer, president of the ski club.

It recently became known that the Bischofshofen Ski Club wants to use the town’s ski jump area as an event and concert area in the summer months from May to September. Now the first major event is on the Schanzen owners’ concert calendar.

The German rock band “Böhse Onkelz” will be performing in Bischofshofen on September 6th and 7th, 2024. With a capacity of up to 20,000 people per concert evening, the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze attracts sports enthusiasts to the jumping stadium, and not just in winter. With events of this size, the ski jump area also becomes one of the largest open-air stages in western Austria.

There have been plans for concert use for a long time

“The idea of using the ski jump as a large event stage for concerts has been around for a few years now,” explains Manfred Schützenhofer, President of the Bischofshofen Ski Club. In addition to the Epiphany competition in winter, this is intended to create another financial source of support for the club.

Although there was some criticism from residents, Schützenhofer sees the concerts as a big step for the city of 11,000 residents, which will also further promote tourism in the region. “The ski jump is a sports and event venue anyway. So residents know regarding the possibility of further events. The concerts only last three to four hours. I think if that creates a problem for residents, there should also be rural youth festivals or the city festival question,” emphasizes the Bischofshofener.

Schanzenzentrum thus creates opportunities

According to Schützenhofer, the fact that the “Onkelz”, a music group well-known in German-speaking countries, was able to be won over as the starting signal for the concert plans was due to a number of contacts and a dense network. “Last year, the Association of Austrian Tourism Managers visited Bischofshofen and visited the ski jump area. We also talked regarding the possibility of using the area as a concert venue.” When Robbie Williams was presented as the opening concert for the ski opening in Schladming, an organizer complained that although he had music groups in prospect for concerts in the region, there were hardly any large venues available. “A colleague then informed him regarding the possibilities in Bischofshofen and so we can now look forward to a big concert spectacle in Bischofshofen,” Schützenhofer looks to the future.

“Everything in moderation”

The stage will be set up in the parking lot in front of the Austria House and looks north, i.e. directly into the ski jumping stadium. “We hope that we can then hold concerts like this on a fairly regular basis. But everything with moderation and purpose. We definitely don’t want to overtax the city, the residents and the possibilities,” assures Schützenhofer in conclusion.
