Ultra-connected and constantly informed, young graduates know which foot to dance on. Many of them know full well that the opportunities lie in the IT professions which are at the top of the functions in tension and in demand. Moreover, the growing adoption of technologies and the intensification of digitization will lead to a high rate of turnover in the labor market.
After the joy and joy felt by those admitted to the national baccalaureate examination the day they learn of the results, there is now room for confusion and bewilderment. Which sector to choose? What are the university courses with the most opportunities? It is true that this is the moment of truth, the choice is decisive and should seal, in a way, the fate of the graduates.
So it is the quest for information that is triggered: not knowing who to contact, parents and future academics begin to inquire with specialists in university orientation, alumni of such a faculty or such an institute…
We try by all means to weigh the choices and the possibilities. After all, it is the professional future of graduates that is in question. However, keeping abreast of the most recent labor market trends is not an easy task. Because, for several years now, the job market has continued to change at breakneck speed. Between the destruction and the creation of thousands of jobs, the dynamic is accelerating as new technologies develop and invade all sectors and fields.
New trends
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, technology and digitalization are the engine that will drive job growth around the world over the next four years. The roles of data analysts and scientists, big data, AI and machine learning specialists, and cybersecurity professionals are expected to increase by 30% on average by 2027. Training workers to use AI and big data will be a priority for a good portion of companies, ranking it behind analytical thinking (48%) and creative thinking (43%) in importance.
Digital commerce will continue to be an important part of the global job market and will be the source of the greatest increase in the number of positions: around 2 million new functions, related to digital, such as specialists in e-commerce, those in digital transformation and marketing are expected to be created by 2027.
On the other hand, the breakthrough of new technologies will contribute to the destruction and decline of several jobs, with office or secretarial functions at the top of the list, including bank employees, cashiers and data entry operators. The green transition also brings its share of opportunities. The obligation to adopt ESG criteria and CSR policies and to implement renewable energies will be an engine of employment growth.
Companies will need skills and specialists in this area. “As countries seek more renewable energy sources, positions for engineers in renewable energy or solar energy installations and systems will be in high demand. The investment will also spur the growth of more general sustainability positions, such as sustainability experts and environmental protection professionals, which are expected to grow by 33% and 34% respectively, resulting in approximately 1 million job growth,” the report explains.
A demand for low-skilled labor
Ultra-connected and constantly informed, young high school graduates apparently know which way to go. Many of them know full well that the opportunities lie in the IT professions which are at the top of the functions which will continue to be in tension in the years to come. Moreover, the growing adoption of technologies and the intensification of digitization will lead to a high rate of turnover in the labor market.
But apart from the IT sector which recruits qualified skills, job creation in Tunisia is particularly strong in low-productivity activities. According to data from the National Agency for Employment and Independent Work, job offers dedicated to executives do not exceed 16% of the total number of positions requested. This figure varies, in a very insignificant way, from one year to another. The sectors of manufacturing industry, mainly textiles and clothing, and services, mainly tourism, remain the main providers of employment in Tunisia.
These are clearly sectors where the labor required is low-skilled, but requires certification acquired through vocational training. In any case, it is clear that young people are not really spoiled for choice. The race for the noble sectors that hold the upper hand puts the baccalaureate holders in competition. However, the continual evolution of the labor market highlights the importance of adapting quickly to these changes. It is only possible through professional training, which is still poorly appreciated by young people.
