The No.16 ranked University of Minnesota Duluth men’s basketball team heads out on the road to Michigan this weekend to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies and the Northern Michigan Wildcats for their final non-conference matchups of the regular season.

THE SEASON SO FAR

The Bulldogs grabbed a pair of wins last weekend in the 2023 Haribo Invitational against the UW Parkside Rangers and the Davenport University Panthers. Senior forward Charlie Katona achieved 1,000 career points in UMD’s 90-66 win over the Rangers, putting up 18 points and leading the game with 7 rebounds. Graduate student Drew Blair led the Bulldogs with 24 points in their triple digit win over the Panthers, their first triple digit performance of the season and their first since last season against UMN Crookston.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Michigan Tech Huskies currently remain 1-3 overall on the 2023-24 season, following a pair of losses last week against the University of Missouri St. Louis Tritons and fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) member St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs defeated the Huskies 99-65 in their most recent matchup last season, and are 6-3 over MTU since the 2013-14 season. The Northern Michigan Wildcats are 4-3 overall to start off the 2023-24 season following a 74-68 overtime win over the Hillsdale College Chargers. UMD is 4-4 against the Wildcats since the 2014-15 season after losing their most recent matchup 76-90 last season.

Head coach Justin Wieck will aim to earn his 100th UMD win this weekend, currently sitting at 99 wins at the mantle of Bulldog basketball. Wieck took over the program in the 2018-19 season and has since put up four winning seasons.

LOOKING AHEAD

Men’s basketball will see their first homestand of the season in Romano Gymnasium next weekend to start off their NSIC schedule. The action will kick off against Wayne State on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 12:00 PM.
