University of Macedonia: 10 Greek scientists in the top 2% of the world

The distinction concerns scientists who are ranked in the highest 2% of the scientific field in which they are active, based on the impact of their work and based on objective criteria, such as the number of cross-citations or the impact factor.

The table, based on data from Scopus, the largest database of abstracts and citations of peer-reviewed scientific publications, has two rankings. The first concerns the entire scientific work and career of the scientists, while the second counts only the references received during the last reference year, i.e. 2023, as they were formed on August 1, 2024.

Based on the first criterion, the professor of the Department of Applied Informatics was distinguished for one more year Dimitrios Christou-Varsakelis. “This particular distinction is certainly honorable and it is encouraging when our scientific work receives significant attention from the international community. Of course, the purpose is rarely the distinction itself. My colleagues, along with them and I, try to do our best for the love of science and because we have a passion for what we do. The most important thing in relation to the recognition of the research work, is that there are colleagues in Greece and in the rest of the world who sometimes use your own contribution to add another stone to the progress of science”, he said to “ET”.

In recent years, Dimitrios – Christou Varsakelis, with a PhD and a postdoc at Harvard, has focused his research on the applications of machine learning in various industries, including medicine and finance. “Machine learning is a branch of Artificial Intelligence, based on mathematics and statistics, that tries to give computers the ability to ‘learn’ from data using patterns and examples, without the need for explicit instructions, so that they can solve complex problems,” he said.

THE DISTINGUISHERS FOR THEIR RESEARCH WORK

Anastasios Oikonomidis (professor in the Department of Economic Sciences), Konstantinos Tarabanis (professor in the Department of Organization and Business Administration) and Konstantinos Psannis (professor in the Department of Applied Informatics) were also distinguished with the same criterion.

Accordingly, based on the annual ranking, for the year 2023 the distinguished scientists are: Dimitrios Cafetzopoulos (assistant professor at the Department of Organization and Business Administration), Rodoula Tsiotsou (professor at the Department of Organization and Business Administration), Fotios Kitsios (professor at the Department of Applied Informatics), Anastasia Katou (professor in the Department of Organization and Business Administration), Eftichios Protopapadakis (assistant professor in the Department of Applied Informatics) and Christos Stergiou, Ph.D. of Sciences) and Konstantinos Psannis (professor in the Department of Applied Informatics).
