The University of Antwerp has opened a disciplinary investigation targeting a prominent professor at the Faculty of Medicine following a report of inappropriate sexual behavior. The professor in question was suspended for six months, pending the conclusions of the investigation, the Gazette of Antwerp et The newspapaer.

The university confirms that an investigation is underway. “We cannot make any comments as a disciplinary investigation is underway within the university,” said Antwerp university spokesperson Peter De Meyer.
At the moment, there is only question of a disciplinary investigation and there is therefore no criminal investigation concerning the professor since the person concerned has not reported the facts to the public prosecutor’s office or to the police.

The prosecution may decide to take up the case.
According to the daily newspapers, the investigation was launched during the summer. The professor in question was suspended for six months, both within the university and at Antwerp University Hospital.
The Disciplinary Board of the University of Antwerp will examine the report internally in the coming weeks and months and will then decide whether the suspension should be extended or whether a sanction should be taken.
