Although the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City is still fresh, there is an underlying sense of pride in the progress Manchester United have made this season.

In his first year in English football, Erik ten Hag took charge of a side coming out of a difficult 2021/22 campaign and led us to third place in the Premier League.

The Reds also put in a great performance once morest Newcastle by winning the Carabao Cup, ending a six-year wait for a league title.

We can therefore say that the Ten Hag era has only just begun.

But before we look at what this team can achieve next season, it’s time to look back on our 2022/23 season. Check out the numbers behind an impressive inaugural campaign at Old Trafford for the Dutchman.

Ten Hag aims for a summer of progress

62 MATCHES PLAYED

In addition to 38 league appearances, the Reds went all the way in both domestic cups and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, giving us 62 appearances during the campaign.

Ten Hag’s men had little free time in midweek, with cup matches filling any gaps in the schedule. United’s calendar has thus become the busiest of all European leagues. Bruno Fernandes also became the player with the most appearances, with the FA Cup final being his 59th of the season for United alone.

42 MATCHES WON

Of the 62 matches played in 2022/23, the Reds still picked up 42 wins in Ten Hag’s debut season. We have lost 12 times and drawn eight games.

We have gone unbeaten in the Premier League since losing to Brighton on Matchday 1. Since that loss to the Seagulls, the Reds have kicked off our campaign with a big win once morest Liverpool, beaten City following trailing, and who might forget that special European night once morest Barcelona?

Antony’s goal, scored in front of a bustling Stretford End, deservedly won Goal of the Season, both for the occasion and the quality of the finish.

Ten Hag has restored Old Trafford to its fortress status, and may it continue.

28 CLEAR MATCHES

A strong defense is the foundation of any successful team. In 2022/23, United have gone an impressive 28 matches unbeaten in all competitions. David De Gea has been the mainstay in defense and the rotation of centre-backs in front of him has contributed to several shutouts.

The Reds have made 17 in the league alone, helping our number 1 win the Golden Glove. Lisandro Martinez and Raphaël Varane provided central defense for much of the season, before the former suffered a premature injury in the Europa League once morest Sevilla FC.

Varane also found himself on the sidelines on several occasions, with Luke Shaw taking over and each time proving to be up to the task. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof also played their part, the latter having played many matches at the start of the season and having been formidable.

At the flanks, Shaw was also deployed in his natural left-back position, backed up by Tyrell Malacia, while Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka shared responsibilities on the right side.

108 GOALS SCORED

With defense being the bedrock of the team, our attackers were able to break free which allowed the Reds to score 108 goals in all competitions.

Thirty of them were of course scored by Marcus Rashford, who benefited from his rejuvenation under Ten Hag. Our number 10 has also delivered 11 assists in 56 matches, bringing his tally of goals to 41 in all competitions, including 22 in the league. He is the first Red to reach 30 goals since Robin van Persie in the title-winning 2012/13 campaign.

L’expression

“stats don’t lie”

comes to mind when analyzing the numbers for our 2022/23 campaign.

Going by the stats presented above, there are plenty of reasons to be happy regarding our season, and even more to be happy regarding our 2023/24 campaign.
