CNN cited a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office as saying that negotiators had been recalled from Qatar following the negotiations hit a dead end. The statement said the Hamas terrorist organization had failed to fulfill its obligations under the agreement, including the return of all women and children held hostage. Britain will send a reconnaissance plane over Gaza to help Israel find the hostages taken by Hamas in October.

CNN reported that the Israel Defense Forces said fighter jets and helicopters attacked targets in the Gaza corridor overnight, including tunnel shafts, command centers and weapons storage facilities. The military said the Hamas militants were targeted and killed by an IDF drone acting under the command of ground forces. In addition, the Jabaliya refugee camp came under attack once more. Israel issued a warning online, stating that the military had resumed its aggressive crackdown on Hamas and other terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip, and called on residents of several old cities to evacuate immediately.

The United States has stepped up pressure on Israel to do more to protect civilians following fighting resumed in Gaza. Speaking at a forum in California, U.S. Defense Secretary Austin said that U.S. support for Israel is non-negotiable, but he also emphasized that protecting civilians in Gaza is critical to Israel’s long-term success in the fight once morest Hamas.
