United States Central Command (CENTCOM) destroyed a drone fired by Yemen’s Houthis on Saturday (16/3) and another one is thought to have crashed in the Red Sea. However, there were no reports of damage to ships in the vicinity.

CETNCOM also said it destroyed five unmanned surface vessels and one UAV for self-defense in Houthi-controlled Yemeni territory.

“It is determined these weapons pose a threat to US merchant ships and Navy vessels in the region,” the statement said.

Months-long Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have disrupted global shipping. This forced companies to switch to longer and more expensive journeys around South Africa.

This sparked concerns that the Israel-Hamas war might spread and destabilize the wider Middle East. The US and UK have carried out strikes once morest Houthi targets in response to attacks on shipping. (CNA/Z-2)
