Former US President Donald Trump will not seek another term as president of the United States. He has been declared ineligible to run in the 2024 presidential election, due to his role in the 2021 storming of the Capitol.
The decision was made on Thursday, December 28, 2023, by the secretary of the State of Maine, whose mission is to organize the elections in her state, following a bipartisan group of former legislators questioned the candidacy by Donald Trump.
“He is not fit to serve as president,” Maine Secretary of State Sheena Bellows said in an official filing.
Under its 14th Amendment, the Constitution excludes persons who have engaged in acts of “insurrection” from any public liability.
This is the second time in the space of 2 weeks that the former American president has been declared “ineligible” for the same reasons.
In Colorado, the Supreme Court ordered, on December 19, the removal of Donald Trump’s name from the ballots.
In the camp of the ex-president, these decisions go down very badly. Trump supporters denounce maneuvers aimed at rigging the next elections.
Donald Trump does not intend to stop with this denunciation. He announces that he will refer the matter to the Supreme Court of the United States, which is an institution competent to decide on this question of ineligibility.
