At least three people were killed Wednesday in a shooting at the site of a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the southern United States, local police said, saying the suspect is also dead.
“We can confirm that four people have died, including the shooter” in a shooting at the site of St Francis Hospital, city police announced on Twitter.
She had previously indicated that she had intervened “earlier in the afternoon” on the spot for “a man armed with a rifle” in a hospital building.
“The police are currently checking every room in the building to rule out any threats,” she added in the statement, which referred to “several injuries.”
The shooter committed suicide, city councilor Jayme Fowler told local television. “Three innocent bystanders lost their lives,” he added.
US President Joe Biden has been kept informed of the shooting, announced the White House, which says it is monitoring the situation closely and offering local authorities the assistance they need.
The shooting comes just over a week after a school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, in which an 18-year-old man killed 19 children and two teachers.
In the United States, shootings in public places are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far been powerless to stem.
