At least three people were killed in a violent tornado that crossed the state of Missouri (central United States), authorities announced Thursday.
A weather alert has been issued for residents of Jefferson City, capital of Missouri, where extensive damage was reported. The state’s public safety department tweeted images of collapsed power lines and uprooted trees.
Three people were killed in Golden City (170 miles southwest of Jefferson City) and “several” others injured in nearby Carl Junction, the department said.
“Violent tornado confirmed, take shelter now!” Tweeted the meteorological services. Heavy rain, hail, wind and lightning battered Missouri as well as neighboring Oklahoma and Kansas.
Weather alerts remained in place early Thursday near St. Louis, Missouri.
In Oklahoma, Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum said residents in areas near a dam on Keystone Lake were encouraged to evacuate their homes due to the risk of flooding.
