The White House reaches a consensus with broadband operators. An agreement has thus been reached with 20 Internet providers, including AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, in order to reduce subscription costs and guarantee broadband access to low-income households. These operators, which cover 80% of the American population in urban, peri-urban and rural areas, have thus committed to increasing their speeds or lowering their prices.
A ceremony formalizing this agreement was, moreover, scheduled yesterday Monday, in Washington, in the presence of leaders of major telecommunications groups. It should be noted that these commitments are part of the vast plan (of 1,200 billion dollars) of the Biden administration, relating to infrastructure.
One component of this project aims to reduce the cost of Internet subscription by up to $30 per month for tens of millions of Americans through subsidies.
According to the White House, eligible households will thus be able to benefit from free very high-speed access. More than 11.5 million of them have already applied to receive this aid, but the administration estimates that 48 million households could be eligible, in total.
Families eligible for the grant are those whose income is at least 200% below the federal poverty level or who have a member who already receives a government assistance program, such as Medicaid health insurance or SNAP food assistance. .
The Biden administration has also launched a site, GetInternet.gov, detailing how to apply for the grant.
