United Nations praises Camila Pirelli and highlights her commitment to women and the environment

Asuncion, IP Agency.-The United Nations Population Fund published an article highlighting the figure of the Guaraní Panther and her leadership within women’s sport.

“On and off the dance floor, Camila has proven to be a woman capable of tirelessly pursuing her dreams, although she admits that it has not been easy,” the statement said.

Review the life of the athlete who in 2023 was recognized by the influential British network BBC as one of the 100 most influential women in the world, thanks to her outstanding career as an athlete and her commitment to equality and care for the environment.

She stresses that the loss of her father when she was just five years old was a hard blow, but thanks to the unconditional support of her mother, Magdalena Cubas, she was able to overcome this adversity and become the woman she is today.

“She taught me to be strong. I believe that I can speak out and be the voice of many women who still don’t dare to speak up thanks to the experience and inspiration I have from my mother,” says Camila.

From a young age, she was immersed in a stimulating sports environment, as her father and mother practiced basketball and athletics, respectively. This family influence led her to explore a wide range of disciplines; however, it was athletics, and more specifically the heptathlon, that captured her heart.

The heptathlon, a test of combined speed, strength and skill, required rigorous preparation. To achieve this goal, the young woman had to make a difficult decision: leave her hometown, Ayolas, 300 kilometers from the capital, and move to Asunción to access better facilities and training.

The sacrifice was worth it. In 2006, just ten months after migrating, Camila won her first gold medal at the South American Junior Athletics Championship, representing Paraguay in Venezuela.

“Since then, she has not stopped achieving national and international achievements that have consolidated her as one of the main figures of Paraguayan athletics: she holds the Paraguayan record for the heptathlon, 200 meters, 400 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 60 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, and shot put.”

A relevant achievement in Camila’s life is that thanks to sport she was awarded a scholarship to study Biology at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, Tulsa, United States.

Despite the injuries that have marked her career, Camila has shown unwavering tenacity. Her participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was a milestone in her career. In fact, her legacy in sport is assured, and her story inspires new generations of athletes and all those women who seek to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

She finds it encouraging to see more women involved in professional sport and recalls that “the growth of Paraguayan women’s sport began in Asunción 2022, where women won more medals than men. This means that the confidence of not only women themselves to play sports is growing, but also that of men: parents, managers, coaches and teammates” she concluded.
