United Nations Appoints Sigrid Kaag as Senior Coordinator of Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction for Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced on Tuesday the appointment of Dutchwoman Sigrid Kaag as Senior Coordinator of Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction for Gaza.

This appointment comes in accordance with resolution 2720 adopted last week by the Security Council, said the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, in a press release.

The coordinator will be responsible for “facilitating, coordinating, monitoring and verifying shipments of humanitarian relief to Gaza, as well as establishing a United Nations mechanism to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian relief to Gaza,” the spokesperson said.

Ms. Kaag, who was Minister of Foreign Affairs of her country, has to her credit “rich” experience in political, humanitarian and development affairs, as well as in diplomacy, according to the same source.

In its new resolution adopted last Friday, the Security Council called for the “immediate and unhindered” delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
