Last week, Suella Braverman, the British Home Secretary herself acknowledged that the anti-migration plan pushed the limits of international law. So, for what purpose did the conservatives present this plan?
The answer is obvious: to rise in the polls. With 20 points behind the Labor Party, the Conservatives are in a very bad shape. General elections are looming in 2024. But in the nearer future, local elections will be held in May.
However, according to a recent study, the second concern of conservative voters – behind the cost of living – is irregular immigration. Which makes Rishi Sunak say that stopping the boats, “It’s not only [sa] priority, but the priority of the people”.
The Prime Minister therefore wants to be perceived as the one who gets his hands dirty, who attacks the crossings, the one who regains control.
“Take back control and stop the boats”.
Et too bad if his plan is inapplicable. Too bad if, in passing, he denies his country’s major international commitments.
