Taipower claims to be losing money in the hope of raising electricity prices, but it is not honest regarding its internal situation and makes arbitrary decisions. Taipower said it sold a total of 233 billion kWh of electricity last year, a “slight” decrease of 1.6% from the previous year. But wait! The year before last, Taipower sold 279.4 billion kWh of electricity, which was actually a 16% decrease. However, Taipower secretly moved the decimal point and hid ten times the truth from the public.
The number of false reports does not end there. Last year, 130.6 billion kilowatt-hours of industrial electricity were sold, a decrease of 16.7% from the previous year’s 156.8 billion kilowatt-hours. This truly reflects the tragic situation of Taiwan’s industrial production in the “19th consecutive black period”. However, Taipower did not give the figures for the year in advance, and only said that it would reduce by 3.7%. By cutting off the beginning and the end, it immediately helped the Tsai government save a lot of face. Including the “slight increase” in residential electricity consumption, it actually means a reduction of 2.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. It is a good news but not a bad news.
It can only be said that Taipower now suffers from schizophrenia. Senior executives try their best to whitewash the situation and show that all government decisions are wise and peaceful. Therefore, the numbers can be distorted and deceived. The grassroots staff are trapped in contradictory decisions and are busy running around, hoping to save their company. But how can wrong decisions be saved by futile execution?
Last year, the media discovered that due to the decline in manufacturing orders and production, Taiwan’s industrial electricity consumption dropped by 6% annually. Because of this, in the scorching heat of July, when everyone turned on the air conditioner, our electricity was enough. Some people describe this as “saving the power supply during recession”. How ironic! Our country’s industrial production has been declining for nineteen consecutive months, and the Tsai government pretended to be indifferent; but Taipower was secretive regarding industrial electricity consumption, which immediately exposed its flaws.
If Taipower wants to raise electricity prices, it must first learn to tell the truth!
