Manchester United interim coach Ralf Rangnick said his side, who lost 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday, are six years behind Liverpool and need a major rebuild if they are to compete for titles once more.
“It’s embarrassing, disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” Rangnick said.
“When Jürgen Klopp came (to take over), the situation at the club changed and it rose to a new level not only as a team but also for the club and the city. This is what should happen to us in the upcoming transfers.”
The German coach said that Liverpool had improved in each transfer period following signing Klopp in 2015, and that had paid off in the squad, which now includes “25 Formula 1 cars”.
Rangnick is not expected to remain in charge of United next season, as Ajax Amsterdam coach Eric Ten Hag is likely to take over.
With the contracts of many players expiring, Rangnick, who also serves as an advisor at the club, said there would be significant transfers to and from the club.
“And before you sign with these players, you have to know what kind of game you want to play? What kind of football does the new coach want to play in order to then bring the right player for this way into each position.”
“There will be a rebuilding for sure,” said the former RB Leipzig coach.
